Did you know that Data concepts dominate a lot of our everyday life? Duffy has whipped you up another 2 useful students who are caught in the act of conducting a data survey.
You can see how we’ve used them in our Whole School Planning – Maths Improvement Plans – T2 Add Subtract Questions for Whole School Assessment. We used them again in our T2 Add Subtract Survey Results Proforma and Instructions. Both these resources help your Maths Improvement Team to collate valuable information about how your students react to addition and subtraction across the whole school. You can then use the results to inform your planning and programming. What are you waiting for?
PHOTOGRAPHS – CREATURES – Great Egret
The Great Egret lives for about 15 years, has an average mass of only 1 kg and a wingspan up to 1.7 m. It was almost wiped out at the end of the 19th century as its feathers were used to decorate ladies hats. It migrates south from the Northern Hemisphere during the colder months. Males and females look identical. They love to build their nests up high in trees that are at least 20 m tall.

Eight lovable dogs to help your Stage 3 students add and subtract 3-digit decimals, compare and sort lengths, masses and ages. And plenty of chance to practice reading data on tables and charts. All the answers supplied so your students can work independently in small groups. Is Tillie shorter than Indigo? And if so, by how many centimetres? If Coco eats 0.32 kg of food each day, how much will she eat in a week? Which 2 dogs are closest in mass? How do you know?
GEOMETRY – POSITION GRAPHICS – Pointer Dog
Duff loves dogs … and he loves drawing them for you and your students. Here’s his Pointer (what other dog would you expect for a Position focus!!) facing either left or right. Put it onto a set of cards for students to use in a direction activity. Throw a die and jump that many spaces to the left or right. Try using both the left and the right Pointer on a set of large cards. Ask your students to stand in a straight line. Reveal one of the cards and call out a number from 1-10. Everyone then jumps/hops/skips/walks that many spaces. What will you use these 2 dogs for in your classroom?

Remember all those family nights playing Snakes and Ladders with your family? Now your Stage 1 (F/1/2) students can play this game with their friends too. A beautiful game board (you’ll find it in Maths Graphics – Position) that originated in ancient India. A brief historical summary for you to talk to your students about, plus a set of game instructions. All you need to add is a 0-6 die and a few coloured counters.
2D SHAPES – PHOTOGRAPHS – 5 new photographs from around the home
We love 2D Shape photographs – in fact we have more of these than any other maths theme in our resources. But we still can’t resist sharing these latest five 2D Shape photographs with you. Beautiful silver tesselated tiles and colourful rugs. Use them to inspire your students to create their own patterns. Or to photograph their own bathroom or kitchen floor and wall tiles and bring them in to share with the whole class. I wonder what you’ll discover there?

Young Stage 1 (F/1/2) students will be inspired by these Monster Measures activities linking addition & subtraction, mass in kg, lengths in cm, ages in years as well as reading data on charts and column graphs. Another focus is on using maths language to discuss what you discover with a partner. Is The Blob heavier than Mr Smiggins? Is Mildred younger than The Blob? Does Uggh the Troll eat more than 50 kg each week?
WHOLE SCHOOL PLANNING – STAFF MEETINGS – Maths Moments – Chipping away with real-life 3D resources
We live in a 3D world, surrounded by objects, positions, colours and much more. When we teach 3D Objects, we need to demonstrate links to real-life whenever we can. Start with real-life and make it a dominant theme throughout your maths session. Like these chips from lunch at a local café – rectangular prisms, stacked and packed, parallel, in a 2/3 pattern.
